Could a Bedford lie detector prove child abuse allegations?

Polygraph tests have recently been helping police when deciding with offenders are ready to be released back into the community. Recently a polygraph test was used on Colin Pitchfork. Pitchfork was found guilty of two accounts of teenage rape and murder in the 80’s. He was recently released but after failing a polygraph test he was taken back into police custody.

A man in Bedford in his 20s has been charged in connection to a number of offences. One offence includes engaging in sexual communication with a child. The man has not been named by police, and was arrested in connection to a number of incidents. One incident took place in Haylands Way area of Bedford on Tuesday 23rd November.

He has been charged with two counts of engaging in sexual communication with a child, two counts of causing a child to watch sexual activity and one count of sexual touching. The man has also been charged with three counts of public order offences. Two counts of which involve possession of cannabis and one count involving cocaine.

How could a lie detector test help in this case?

Police can arrest a suspect if they feel theyhave enough evidence to do so. With the use of polygraph technology, police can get an accurate judgement on if a suspect is guilty or not. This means that more suspects could be stopped before potentially causing harm, or breaking the law. In this case, a polygraph test would offer a solid profiling on the suspect and help warn the community if the police suspect he is a cause for concern. A polygraph test can also help decide if a suspect has planned to carry out an action and can therefore give warniing in advance of a crime.
