Hartlepool lie detector used in sex offender case

A Hartlepool lie detector could have been used in a sex offender case to prove the suspect guilty or innocent.

The case

A Hartlepool man will stand trial before a jury over claims he had “extreme” pornography featuring two women performing a sex act with a pair of dogs.

Simon Lott entered a not guilty plea to a single charge of possessing an extreme pornographic image portraying an act of intercourse / oral sex with a dead / alive animal.

The hearing

Dressed in a suit, the 43-year-old entered the plea at a brief Teesside Magistrates Court hearing on Wednesday afternoon.

The hearing was told the case was suitable for a trial at that court.

However, the defendant opted to instead have it heard before a Teesside Crown Court jury. The defendant, of Queensland Road will next appear on March 16.

District Judge Helen Cousins granted him unconditional bail.

How a polygraph test could help the case

Police are now using polygraph testing upon arrest of sex abusers and offenders. They are now asking suspects to take polygraph tests during the interrogation stages. Taking a lie detector test this early on in a case helps police rule out suspicions or to confirm suspects guilt. In Lott’s case a polygraph test would help indicate if he was guilty of possessing indecent pornography. Police are also making regular polygraph testing part of release terms. This has meant communities that are concerned over the release of sex offenders into their community have peace of mind knowing that they are held accountable to regular polygraph tests. The police believe that this has helped reduce repeat offending dramatically.
