Derby Lie Detector Test reveals Human Trafficking Betrayal

Our client was excited about an opportunity to work as a hotel receptionist in London with accommodation provided. Never did she imagine that it would end with her brother taking a Derby lie detector test.

Marsela’s Case

When Marsela’s brother, Dalmat, told her that a friend of his had heard about hotel reception vacancies in London, she really wanted to apply. Her English studies would serve her well she thought. Living a very poverty-stricken life in Albania she dreamed of helping her family.

The problem was that she didn´t have 7,500 lek (around £52) for a passport, much less 800,000 lek (around £5,500) needed for the trip. Dalmat told her not to worry, he would fix it. And miraculously he did.  Giving her the brand-new passport, he told her all the necessary paperwork would be organised by the hotel she would be working at. However, because she didn’t have a visa, she would be taking the trip hidden in the back of a lorry.

Dalmat said that she could pay off the cost of the trip in instalments when she started earning money. Initially alarmed by the ‘travel arrangements’, Marsela was reassured by her brother that all would be well.

Perilous journey

When the time came to leave, Marsela bid her parents and grandparents farewell. Tearfully she promised that she would send money home and keep in touch regularly.

Boarding the lorry with 15 other women and 3 men, they were all secreted behind a false rear panel. There was water but the only food they had was what they had brought with them. They would not leave the lorry until they reached their destination.

The 30-hour journey took its toll. Somewhere along the way the driver had been stopped at customs and was ordered to open the lorry for inspection. Crammed full of clothing and footwear, only a cursory check was made before allowing the truck to go on its way. Marsela was terrified they would be caught but luck was on her side. En route the driver stopped for a break but didn’t let the passengers out.  One woman suffered a panic attack as claustrophobia set in.

Arriving at the hotel

When they reached their destination, the relief was palpable. Briefly they filled their lungs with fresh air before being led into the hotel. But the relief would be short lived.

Within half an hour all passengers, male and female, were made aware that they were not going to be hotel receptionists. They needed to pay off their passage with “escort work” and they wouldn’t get their passports back until the debt was paid.

For three years Marsela was forced to provide sexual services and her debt never decreased. The exorbitant interest charged on the debt increased daily making it impossible to settle.

Her miserable existence came to an end when there was a Border Force raid. This was when she became aware that her passport was a forgery. The raid resulted in several men being charged with Human Trafficking, Smuggling and Slavery offences. Among the names of those charged, was Marsela’s brother.

Marsela was horrified that her own brother could have sold her into a life of effective slavery. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and wrote to Marsela telling her he was innocent.

However, if he was innocent why had he not been to visit her. She didn’t even know he was in the UK.

Marsela learned from one of her cousins that Dalmat had sent a lot of money home to their parents over the past several years. She arranged for some of this money to be sent to her and contacted us to enquire about a lie detector test in Derby.  She wanted to believe her brother but her instincts told her he was lying.

Through Dalmat’s legal representative we were able to conduct a Derby lie detector test. As Marsela suspected, the test showed deception in all the responses to questions she needed answers to.  His only saving grace, was that he’d at least sent money home to the family.

Conclusion

Marsela is now back in Albania. She will never forgive Dalmat for what he did but intends to return to the UK one day legally.

According to the charity Unseen 4.8 million people are victims of forced sexual exploitation in the UK.
