Penny and Daniel’s Case
Daniel worked in the City “buying and selling money” as he described it. During the week he worked long hours but on Friday nights, he and his colleagues always went for a few drinks after work.
On one such night he met an amazingly attractive young woman and they ended up staying in the bar long after his colleagues had gone home. At the end of the evening she invited him back to her place for a nightcap. He was already the worse for wear and should have refused but maybe one more wouldn’t matter, he’d thought.
One night stand
Daniel remembered talking about their careers and hopes for the future. She worked in an art gallery and although he didn’t know much about art, her enthusiasm for it enchanted him. One thing led to another and they ended up in bed together
The following morning he had the hangover from hell but she suggested going out for breakfast. As he moved eggs and bacon around his plate and she toyed with a croissant, she told him she had a boyfriend. As far as Daniel was concerned that appeared to be that! They went their separate ways and didn’t even exchange phone numbers. A few hours later, at home, he was ashamed to admit to himself that he couldn’t even remember her name.
False allegations of date rape
The following Monday the police turned up at Daniel’s workplace. He was surprised to say the least but agreed to accompany them to the police station for an interview. He was horrified when he learned that he had been accused of date rape. Jessica said he’d drugged her drinks and she couldn’t remember anything else until she woke up and Daniel was in bed with her. (At least he knew her name now). She made no mention of them having breakfast together. Daniel supplied the name of the café that they had gone to.
He wasn’t arrested or charged but he was told that the police would want to speak to him again, pending further enquiries.
Soho lie detector test
Daniel was shocked. He’d never broken the law in his life. Rather than go back to the office he went straight home to try to get his head together.
He called his sister, Penny and she came straight over. She knew her brother was incapable of such a thing. Discussing what happened in detail with him, Penny thought that maybe the girl’s boyfriend had found out she’s had sex with someone else. This was perhaps her way of getting out of the trouble she was in.
Penny suggested that Daniel take a Soho lie detector test with us and they booked an urgent appointment for a home test. Our central London polygraph examiner conducted the test and established that Daniel hadn’t drugged Jessica’s drinks. He hadn’t raped her either.
Back at the police station
In full possession of the results the following day, Penny and Daniel went to the police station. Whilst polygraph results can only be used in court at the discretion of a judge, they do help to instigate a deeper investigation.
It transpired that this wasn’t the first time that Jessica had made false allegations of date rape and the case was not taken any further.
Daniel also organised a meeting with his boss and gave him a copy of the polygraph results after he’d explained what had happened.
Everyone has now drawn a line under it but Daniel is more careful about what he does when he goes out. He doesn’t drink quite as much and will never go back to anyone’s place for a nightcap that he doesn’t know very well.
