Brighton polygraph test used for stealing allegations

A client asked if a Brighton polygraph test could be used to disprove allegations of stealing against her.

The case

Sally got a part time job in a small antiques shop after losing her graphic design role due to the pandemic. She says the part time job was a saviour as she needed the money to pay her bills. Sally loved her job and was happy to be out socialising again after living alone during the pandemic.

The accusations start

However, only three months into the job Sally was pulled aside one afternoon by her boss Louise. Louise said she had an awkward question to ask. She had noticed the last week that the till had been down. Louise said that she had checked each day but the till was out from £5-£20.

Sally was the newest member of staff, so Louise wondered if she needed more training on the till. She didn’t accuse Sally of stealing the money. Instead was concerned that Sally was entering things incorrectly into the till system.

Emma and Robert were also members of staff at the shop. The pair worked alternative weekends, and Emma had trained Sally on the till when she started. Sally told Louise she was happy and confident on the till but she was happy for Louise to shadow her to check she was doing everything correctly.

It all adds up

Louise shadowed Sally for the next two hours before the shop closed, and that night the till balance. Deciding there must be an issue with something another member of staff was doing Louise decided to call a team meeting that Friday.

The Friday arrived and Louise told the staff how the till hadn’t been balancing. She confessed that she had already shared a shift with Sally and it had been fine. Louise told Emma and Robert how she would be working with them on their next shifts. She said she just to ensure their training was all correct too. Robert was happy to agree, but Emma seemed unhappy. She immediately said how Louise should trust them and how she didn’t like being made to feel guilty. She also made a claim that she had seen Sally near the till with cash, but had assumed Sally was just banking some of the extra till money.

Sally was upset that Emma was accusing her of stealing, and decided the best thing to do would be to search the internet for help and advice. She came across one of our blogs from August about how a local polygraph test had helped clear a man of suspected theft.

So Sally wrote to our Brighton office, and here is our examiner’s response.
